Central Explorer
Central Explorer
A large part of Central Japan is characterised by rugged mountains as high as 3000 meters and due to this mountainous landscape it is often called the ‘roof of Japan’. These ‘Japan Alps’ divide the country into the Pacific side, bathed in sunshine in winter, and the Sea of Japan side, covered in powder snow in winter.
The Central Explorer will take you to the Kanto region and the Chubu region, lying between Tokyo and Kyoto in the middle of Honshu, the main island of Japan. The new Hokuriku shinkansen provides easy access to the area and is perfect for the first time visitor, experienced travellers or for those on a brief stopover.
Central Japan is full of destinations awaiting your discovery including Jigokudani Onsen where the snow monkeys bath in hot springs, the historical streets of feudal Kanazawa and Takayama and the UNESCO listed villages of Shirakawago and Gokayama. During the warmer months, you can cross the ‘Alpine Route’ between Nagano and Toyama, where you will not only be astounded by the breathtaking nature, but also impressed by the amazing transportation system through the mountains. The great snow wall, where the road is carved into metres of snow is a sight not to be missed.
